Q: What is the difference between Annual & Capital gifts?

A: Craig Paris explains:

Annual gifts and capital gifts play distinct –but equally important – roles in sustaining Delbarton's financial well-being. What's the difference between the two ways of giving?

“An annual gift (to the Delbarton Fund) supports the School's operating budget for the current year,” says Craig Paris, Director of Development. “It represents an investment in existing, rather than future, programs. It is unrestricted, allowing us to apply it wherever it is most needed, from scholarships and curricular programs to athletics and technology. And an annual gift is typically made from a donor's income, rather than from assets.”

Annual gifts to the Delbarton Fund consistently provide 10 percent of the School's yearly operating budget.

“Capital giving is different,” Craig explains. “Capital campaigns are periodic, not yearly. A capital gift is used to increase or improve permanent assets, particularly buildings and endowments for tuition aid, faculty and key programs. A capital gift to Delbarton represents an investment in the School's future – rather than current – people and programs. A capital gift is usually more substantial than one's customary annual gift – and is often made from the donor's assets, rather than from current income.”

Annual gifts to the Delbarton Fund are counted as part of the Campaign for Delbarton's proceeds.
