  • Del Engineers Take Second at US First Tech Championship

    Delbarton’s US FIRST Tech team took second place in the New Jersey state championships on Sunday, February 12. The Delbarton team, led by seniors Nick Lee '12 and Omar Rizwan '12, competed in November to qualify for a spot in the NJ championships and were up against 48 teams at Sunday’s event held at NJIT. US First Tech is a world-wide engineering competition for students in grades 9 – 12.

    Moderator Br. Kevin Tidd, OSB, reports that Delbarton’s Forensic Society had a highly successful weekend from January 26-29 at the 57th Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

    The National Forensic League (the other, more loquacious NFL) recently announced that Delbarton senior James Weldon '12, under the guidance of coach Br. Kevin Tidd, OSB, has earned the degree of Premier Distinction, the League's highest rank of student membership.

    Someone in India Needs Your Used Eyeglasses

    During the week of January 16-20 the Delbarton community is invited to donate used eye glasses in Trinity Lobby. The drive is organized by Vishwam ('universal') an organization, founded by Nishwant Swami '13 and his younger brother Vishrudan, whose mission is to deliver used American eyeglasses to vision-impaired people in India.     The subject in Rob Flynn's junior English class on January 9, 2012 was the book Speak, in which the introverted main character describes a freshman year from hell. Realizing that students had questions he wasn't qualified to answer, Flynn called upon a young expert: his sister Katie Flynn, a domestic violence and rape crisis specialist. See photos here.

    Delbarton students found a creative way to fill the after school hours on the final day before Christmas break. They staged a Nintendo 64 Tourney to raise funds for the St. Anthony of Padua Foundation which sends inner city kids to summer camp and tutoring sessions. Click here for pictures.

    Cellist John Lee '12 has been named a 2012 YoungArts National Finalist by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA), and will participate in YoungArts Week 2012 in Miami this January 8-15. Lee was selected as one of 150 finalists from nearly 5,000 applications to this year's program.

    Biology teacher Brian Theroux came up with an interesting way to celebrate the holiday on the Monday before Thanksgiving. He arranged for his freshman students to dissect baby chickens. Even the people at Costco were skeptics: "Twenty-two chickens? You know we sell turkeys, right?"

    They did it! The Visigoths sacked the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive deanery competition!

    Thank to the generosity of Delbarton families the 2011 Thanksgiving Food Drive collected -- wait for it -- 49,785 pounds of food. Our stated goal was 45,000 pounds of food for the Community Soup Kitchen but goals are meant to be topped. The mightly Visigoth clan won the deanery competition with a wopping 6,814 points, followed by the Apaches with 5,539 and the Cherokees with 5,066 points.
